The production company was able to film almost all scenes on location on Mackinac Island. No studio scenes were needed. The exceptions being the Chicago location scenes after the film opening.
It is said that Somewhere In Time is only one of three movies that have a fully independent international fan club. The other two are Gone With The Wind and The Wizard Of Oz.
Somewhere In Time yearly ranks among the top 20 videos rented for Universal Studios.
Mackinac Island restricts motorized vehicles usage. The production company was allowed the use of one vehicle per day to transport equipment. The main mode of transportation is horse and buggy.
The scene where Richard and Elise first board a buggy was the most retakes of anyscene in the movie. Due to the constant problem of horses bolting the actors were forced to ad lib. In the the scene included in the horse takes off on it’s own.
The life of character of Elise McKenna was based American Actress Maude Adams who died a recluse in 1953.
Richard Matheson based the character of Richard Collier on himself and his obsession for Maude Adams. Matheson on a family vacation came across her photo portrait at the Piper’s Opera House in Neveda. The writer conceived major portions of the book in a room at the Hotel Del Coronado, San Diego, CA. He would dictate into a tape recorder projecting himself in the Richard Collier frame of mind. In the original book “Bid Time Returns” Hotel Del Coronado is the where the main book takes place. The location is retained even after the book was re released and retitled “Somewhere In Time.”Richard Matheson makes a cameon film as the man who runs into Collier leaving the bathroom after shaving voicing the one word, “Astonishing.”
Orignially Richard Collier died due to complications from a brain tumor. Both Richard Matheson who wrote the book and screenplay and director Jennot Szwarc agreed that premise did not work for the movies. They decided Richard dying of a broken heart and the strain of being weakened by time travel fit into the theatrical telling more acceptably.
The owners of the Grand Hotel offered the location at no cost as long as it was prominently featured in the movie. At the time of the filming the hotel was in it’s peak season at 85% full. Many of the guest served as extras. Their gamble would pay off as Mackinac Island has become a resort for young lovers worldwide. Each year The Grand Hotel features a Somewhere In Time Getaway once a year. Serving as the main locations for the movie has generated million in income for the Island. The Grand Hotel due to the traffic of sightseers began to in the eighties to charge a fee to walk the property. It began at $2 is at the time of this writing has risen to $10 per person. The flow of walking tourist is regulated to preserve the privacy of the paying guest.
Despite appearances shooting had to accommodate the height difference between the 6′4” Christopher Reeves and the generously billed as 5′ 4” Jane Seymour.
Somewhere In Time was the first movie to be filmed with differing film stock. As per director Jeannot Szwarc Fujifilm was used where he felt softer textures and pastel color would accent the scene. Kodak was used for the scenes that need vivid sharp clarity. Basically this method would add to the distinct differences in the time periods.
